Welcome to Tandem Coffee and Bakery, a delightful gem nestled at 742 Congress St in the heart of Portland, Maine. This charming establishment effortlessly combines a passion for rich coffee with the bliss of freshly baked goods, creating an inviting atmosphere that keeps both locals and visitors coming back for more.

With their unique heritage, having transformed from an old car wash into a bustling bakery, Tandem offers a vibrant retro vibe that is both welcoming and nostalgic.

As you step inside, the tempting aroma of freshly baked pastries greets you. The menu here is bursting with mouthwatering options that cater to both savory and sweet cravings. Not to be missed are their breakfast sandwiches, particularly the Breakfast Sandwich with Egg and American cheese, elegantly accompanied by a smoked paprika mayo on a buttery buttermilk biscuit for just $6.50. Alternatively, the Chorizo Breakfast Sandwich at $9.00 offers a delightful kick, ensuring a satisfying start to your day.

  • Quiche Slice ($6.00) - A blend of roasted cherry tomatoes, scallion, and rich ricotta
  • Granola with Yogurt ($9.00) - House-made granola served with luscious almond milk yogurt and topped with a cherry-apricot-raspberry compote
  • Loaded Biscuit ($6.00) - A hearty choice for those craving something substantial

The pastry selection is equally noteworthy. Highlights include the Elote Danish infused with corn salad and cotija, and the coveted Sticky Bun, a warm, cinnamon-filled delight drizzled with an orange glaze, both priced at $6.00. For cookie lovers, the famous Chocolate Chip Cookie and the Spicy Ginger Molasses Cookie at $4.00 each are not simply desserts but experiences waiting to be savored.

Customer feedback reflects the passion and quality Tandem brings to its offerings. Kevin K. praised the 'very good egg and cheese,' while Pegg X. passionately declares it the "best bakery" she’s experienced. Guests marvel at the fluffy, flaky biscuits, which Peter D. raves about, describing them as nothing short of perfection. Whether it’s the unique flavor profiles in the pastries or the carefully crafted coffee selections, Tandem encapsulates the essence of artisanal baking and brewing.

However, a word of advice: arrive early! This spot tends to be bustling, as hungry patrons flock to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and delectable fare. The limited indoor seating may warrant a quick to-go order, but with options for outdoor seating, you can savor every bite under the Maine sun.

In conclusion, a visit to Tandem Coffee and Bakery is not just about food; it's an experience enriched by incredible flavors and a warm community vibe. Whether you’re savoring a breakfast sandwich, indulging in pastries, or simply enjoying a cup of expertly brewed coffee, Tandem proves to be a delightful destination that invites you to linger just a little longer.

Very good egg and cheese and good espresso. Can be quite crowded but the atmosphere is very friendly.

Visiting Portland for the weekend and Tandem Coffee + Bakery is a must try. Delicious pastries and coffee with lots of seating outside. Tried the Blood orange scone and cranberry muffin with were perfectly seasoned without being too sweet at all. Cappuccino and mocha were tasty too with beautiful latte art too. Parking is difficult nearby so had to walk a few blocks & pay for street parking.

I'd give this place six stars if I could. Tandem simply can do no wrong. After trying out all sorts of bakeries and coffee shops in Portland, Tandem still comes out on top as the very best. They have annoyingly limited hours, but I highly recommend making the trek. Their jalapeno-cheddar scones are to die for: they're spicy and zingy and fluffy and delicious. Their ginger molasses cookies are delightfully spiced and flawlessly textured -- crisp on the outside, caramelized on the edges, and chewy on the inside. I also ordered a batch of their apple cider scones for Thanksgiving, which were a tad too tangy for my taste, but still flavorful and excellent. I also had one of the best cake slices of my life here, which I think was a rotating special. I don't remember what it was called, but it consisted of an airy chocolate sponge, a whipped chocolate frosting, and some kind of brittle on top that was divine. (Tandem: please message me if you know what I'm talking about and ever offer this cake again and I will drop everything and come running!) I love the exterior of the Congress Street location -- it used to be a car wash, so has a retro, diner-y feel. There's very limited seating inside, and it's usually super crowded, so I typically order to-go and enjoy my Tandem elsewhere. All to say: drop everything and go! Order anything that looks good to you, and you can't go wrong. I can't wait to be back!

You HAVE to try the breakfast sandwich! Simple but OH SO TASTY. There's a nice chipotle aioli-type sauce that I honestly wanted to drown myself in. The biscuits there are so good, highly recommend trying a few things. You won't be disappointed!

I cannot stress how important it is to get there early in order to get their food. I also cannot stress how good their biscuits are. Okay, my favorite biscuit is one made with kimchi and black sesame seeds, but other, tamer biscuits are just as good. The egg sandwiches are out of this world, as are the rotating cookies on the menu. I suggest getting two different biscuits and trying both--the same with the sweets. They are just that special. I would eat there every day if I lived closer!

Please open up a store in north New Jersey! The coffee, the treats, the sandwiches... stop, I'm in love. I just had to grab a bag of coffee to bring back with me. This place exudes care, quality, and excellence. I absolutely loved the rhubarb scone. My partner teared up eating the cinnamon roll lmao. It was so good! The sausage egg and cheese on a biscuit was equally exceptional. Nice touch with the maldon salt on top. Can't waaait to come back. Thanks for the food and good vibes!

Wow, I have come here twice and honestly between coffee design and this place. These are my top two coffee shops in Portland, Maine for sure this place has one of the most unique desserts that I've seen at a coffee shop, but they're all so good. I had the biscuit With the cream cheese and strawberry filling, and then I had the kimchi scone, which was also very delicious and very unique. The long lines in the fast service before itself there's a reason why this coffee shop is so popular.

I eat a lot, and I have a lot of opinions, and people often ask me what my favorite pizza/burger/bagel/whatever is. And I usually find that to be a difficult question to answer, as there are so many varied and wonderful things to eat in this life, and it's hard to choose. Well, Tandem makes it pretty easy. I can definitively say that this is the best biscuit I've ever eaten in my life. I don't know what they are doing back there, but their biscuits are fluffy, flaky, salty perfection. I say this confidently, and even after coming in with absurdly high expectations. One of my most trusted food friends (you can find her around this website too) had insisted I make it to Tandem while I was in Portland, and leveled with me about her first bite of Tandem's biscuit: "I wept." And she was right. You can get them slathered with jam and butter, with jalapeno and cheddar baked in, as part of the best sausage egg and cheese of your life, loaded with savory ricotta and spicy tomato jam, or just plain. After I ate my first at the convenient picnic tables outside, I bought two more from the surprisingly lovely staff (considering the line out the door) and flew them back to Brooklyn in an attempt to purchase my wife's love. It worked. My only regret is not purchasing one of everything. Clearly, they know how to bake here, and the pies, breads, scones, and cookes all look incredible.

I was so impressed by Tandem during my last visit to Portland in 2021 that I made it my intention to check them out again - their biscuits and other baked goods were some of the best I had in Portland, and I wanted to see if they still held up. That being said, we made the walk over from Old Port one morning for breakfast to check them out. Tandem is housed in what looks like an old garage/mechanics shop that has been repurposed into a bakery. While they have awesome baked goods, they are also known for their coffee - they sell bags of beans and also have a more wholesale location over on the eastern side of the city. During my last trip there was still come COVIDness going on so they weren't letting anyone inside - but this time they were so I was able to get the full experience. In addition to sweet bakes, they have a selection of quiche and breakfast sandwiches. While there's usually a line, it moves quickly, and there is a decent amount of seating inside and (mostly) outside if you want to sit and enjoy. I decided to get an sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit sandwich - and then we shared a blueberry scone and a spiced loaf. While the breakfast sandwiches are pre-made, it was delicious with high-quality ingredients and tons of flavor. The other bakes were great too - especially the loaf which had really complex flavors. This really lived up to my expectations and what I experienced when I visited three years ago. Service was fast and friendly; the line moved quickly and the staff was on it. Overall, there's a reason why Tandem is such a popular spot in Portland - and my revisit only proved that. I would definitely return here time and time again.

This was a must stop on our trip to Portland. My husband loves their coffee beans so we had to go to pickup some more bags. It was packed by the time we got there but the line moved relatively fast. My iced coffee was good, the coffee tasted balanced. I would have liked my latte a little sweeter but overall was happy with it. The best was the biscuit! This giant biscuit can definitely be shared and was full of butter and jam. I actually didn't finish it initially but came back to it later in the day and the butter beautifully melted into biscuit making it even better than when I first ordered it!
